Multiple online platforms are keen to incorporate AI elements to keep up with new tech trends. Instagram is currently testing a new AI-generated Profile Picture that depicts the real user’s profile.
As app researcher Alessandro Paluzzishared here, Instagram is currently working on a new option that would enable you to generate an AI profile picture directly from your profile editing options. This would allow you to quickly and easily tap into Meta’s AI image generation tools to update your picture.
This year, Meta companies have also been experimenting with AI-generated profile images, while both TikTok and Snapchat have similar options in their respective “Dreams” and AI avatar creation options.
While AI-generated images do not accurately depict your lived experience, this new development brings back the Issues of impersonification, fake news, and security, which have been a big issue in the online world.
“The activity of some of the worst actors on the web, and as noted, enabling scammers and misinformation peddlers to dupe people within social apps, surely enabling and encouraging the use of such tools is not a benefit, on balance, Social Media Today argued.”
Earlier this year, Facebook and Instagram cracked down on profiles that use Fake AI-generated images to accounts for being used to spread coordinated political propaganda and influence campaigns, the social media giant announced in its quarterly report, yet now the platforms are actively encouraging these trends.
At the same time, Tech Giant Zuckerberg, Meta CEO, announced that a lot more AI-generated content is coming to fill up your Facebook and Instagram feeds and described AI as the likely next wave of content for platforms like Facebook and Instagram.Â
“I don’t know if we know what’s exactly going to work well yet, but some things are auspicious,” he added. “I have high confidence that this will be one of the important trends and applications over the next several years.” Zuckerberg noted. Â
Adding. “I think we’re going to add a whole new category of content, which is AI-generated or AI summarized content, or existing content pulled together by AI in some way,” the Meta CEO said. “And I think that that’s gonna be very exciting for Facebook, Instagram, and maybe Threads, or other kinds of feed experiences over time.”
Do you think users will be comfortable sharing the same? How useful are generative AI tools beneficial to a social media context?
While Meta’s core objective this year is connecting humans for “social” purposes, the new tech trend might be counterintuitive.
