In a crucial appearance before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, TikTok CEO Shou Chew addressed concerns regarding online child safety, highlighting TikTok’s steadfast commitment to protecting its vast user base, especially minors.
With over a billion users globally, including 170 million in the United States, TikTok has become a popular platform for creativity and self-expression.
Chew expressed gratitude for the opportunity to discuss TikTok’s efforts in combating online threats, emphasizing the platform’s dedication to protecting young users through innovative technology and significant investments in trust and safety.
“As a father of three young children, I know the issues we’re discussing today are horrific – and every parent’s nightmare,” “But the question remains: what about the children of the world?” Chew empathized.
Chew underscored TikTok’s commitment to creating age-appropriate user experiences, especially for minors. He highlighted policies such as restricting direct messaging for users under 16, automatic privacy settings for accounts under 16, and screen time limits.
“Ensuring safety is a top priority at TikTok under my leadership. features like Family Pairing tools empower parents to supervise their teens’ online activities.” Chew stated before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
TikTok, a pioneer in combating online exploitation, has implemented measures to protect teenagers from harmful content or behavior. Chew informed the committee about employing over 40,000 trust and safety professionals, with an expected investment of over two billion dollars in trust and safety efforts for the current year, a significant portion of which will be dedicated to U.S. operations.
The CEO highlighted TikTok’s use of advanced technology to moderate content, swiftly identifying potential child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and promptly removing or escalating it for further review. Additionally, TikTok collaborates with third-party tools like PhotoDNA and Take It Down to combat CSAM and prevent its upload to the platform.
Chew concluded his statement by expressing TikTok’s unwavering commitment to collaborating with lawmakers, parents, teachers, and teens to strengthen platform protections.
He acknowledged the collective effort required to ensure online safety for teens and welcomed the opportunity to work with the committee on legislation to achieve this common goal.
